On November 6, 2020, the bankruptcy court established April 15, 2021 as the proof of claim deadline in the Diocese of Syracuse bankruptcy case. More information regarding filing a proof of claim can be found on the FAQ page.

On November 3, 2020, the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors’ (the “Committee”) filed a motion pursuant to Bankruptcy Rule 2004 requesting that the bankruptcy court order the Diocese of Syracuse to provide discovery relating to its assets, among other things. Since then, the bankruptcy court has “continued” the motion on several occasions, while the Committee and the Diocese of Syracuse work informally to facilitate the transfer to the Committee of documents the Committee is entitled to. These efforts have resulted in the Diocese of Syracuse producing thousands of pages of documents to the Committee.

On October 13, 2020, the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors (the “Committee”) filed an objection to the Diocese of Syracuse’s motion seeking a proof of claim deadline. The objection included the Committee’s request that the proof of claim deadline be set so that claims be filed by August 14, 2021, so that it would mirror the deadline set by the New York Child Victims Act for bringing claims based on child sexual abuse that were previously barred by statutes of limitation. On September 21, 2020, the Diocese of Syracuse filed a motion requesting that the bankruptcy court set the proof of claim deadline on March 1, 2021. More information regarding filing a proof of claim can be found at on the FAQ page.
